Our research director Nermin Oruč participated at the Network Conference of Spa-ce.net, titled “21st year of 21st century – Western Balkans’ Challenge of Common Future”. The conference was organised on 21st-22nd September 2021, Belgrade, Serbia as a hybrid event. Organizers of the conference were Network of Spatial Research and Planning in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe (Spa-ce.net), Faculty of Geography University of Belgrade and Western Balkan Network on Territorial Governance.
Nermin presented his paper “Empirical test of theoretical model of self-selection by forced migrants: application to Bosnia-Herzegovina” at the panel on Western Balkans as a crossroad of various mobilities in the XXI century. The paper fills the gap in the literature on the costs of conflict and forced migration. It tests a theoretical model of the effect of forced migration on emigration of highly educated individuals (Oruc, Jackson and Pugh, 2019) by using a household level data from Bosnia-Herzegovina. The purpose is to measure the impact of different factors affecting the household’s decision to migrate, particularly the effect of education that would provide evidence of self-selection in forced migration. By providing evidence on the brain drain from countries in conflict, this paper gives an insight into the effect of forced migration on the stock of human capital in a country.
